Become an EWC Volunteer

New or unregistered Volunteers,  please do the following (this includes previous EWC volunteers who did not elect to become registered Chapter volunteers.)

  • Complete the Chapter Volunteer requirements detailed on the chapter Becoming a Volunteer page.  (When completing the Oregon Trail Chapter volunteer application, make sure to check the Emergency Warming Center box in the Skills, Interests & Preferences section of the application)
  • Attend an Emergency Warming Center Orientation

Existing American Red Cross Employees and registered volunteers

  • Email Curtis Peetz with your expression of interest and availability
  • Attend an Emergency Warming Center Orientation (please note that this is required even if you participated as a Warming Center worker in the past.)

Introduction to the 2010-11 OTC Emergency Warming Center

The weather is changing and cold winter will be approaching. It is time to start preparing for winter weather and Emergency Warming Centers. The City of Portland has approached Red Cross again and is providing us a contract to open and staff an Emergency Warming Center this winter.

Current Emergency Warming Center Orientations (check the Emergency Services Calendar and Events page to confirm the date and time before attending):

  • January 11, 2011 4-5:30p.m., OTC Headquarters, Tillamook Conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland
  • January 14, 2011 11:30am-1:00p.m., OTC Headquarters, Washington conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland
  • January 17, 2011 10:00-11:30a.m., OTC Headquarters, Tillamook conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland
  • January 19, 2011 8-9:30a.m., OTC Headquarters, Tillamook conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland
  • January 25, 2011 4-5:30p.m., OTC Headquarters, Tillamook conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland
  • February 2, 2011 11:30-1:00p.m., OTC Headquarters, Tillamook conference Room, 3131 N Vancouver Ave Portland

After attending the orientation you will receive scheduling instructions to sign up for Emergency Warming Center shifts. Members of the public are encouraged to apply to participate in this worthwhile Red Cross program. If you know someone who may be interested in staffing the center please share the orientation information with them.

Activation Triggers

The City of Portland will alert the Oregon Trail Chapter when they have confirmed that weather conditions meet the requirements of emergency warming center activation. Notification should occur by 2 p.m. on the day in question.

Under DRY conditions

  • Single night 22 degrees Fahrenheit or below
  • Three consequential nights 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below
  • 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below and sustained wind of 15 mph

Under WET conditions

  • 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, with 1 inch forecast accumulation of precipitation
  • 32 degrees and sustained wind of 15 mph
  • 1 inch of snow on the ground over most of Portland

Location and Hours of Operation

The Red Cross Emergency Warming Center facility is located at the

  • Imago Dei Community, 1304 SE Ankeny, Portland, OR 97214

When activated, the Emergency Warming Center is open to guests from 9:00 pm to 7:00 am

EWC Shifts

The warming centers operate with four shifts of workers as follows:

  • Shift 1A - 8pm to 11pm
  • Shift 1 (overnight) - 8pm to 6am
  • Shift 2 (morning and clean up) - 5:45am to 9:00am
  • Shift 2A (clean up) - 7am to 9:00am

Sign Up

  • Self-schedule for a shift using your VicNet login and password (issued when all chapter volunteer requirements have been completed)
  • Call the ES Staffing phone- 503-280-1495- and let us know the shift and day for which you are available. Also please leave 24/7 contact info. Please do not call to notify us that you are not available.
  • Send an email to otcstaffing@redcross-pdx.org specifying your shifts and 24/7 contact info.

Reporting

Please report to the Imago Dei Community, 1302 SE Ankeny Portland, OR 97214. Staff parking is available at the corner of SE Ankeny and SE 12 behind the facility. The staff entrance is located on the west side of the facility, walk up the stairs, turn right and head to the back of the building. If you need to reach someone at the warming center please call the Shift Supervisor Cell Phone at 503-816-3429.
